Abstract

1466075 Refractory bodies and coatings KAMAN SCIENCES CORP 24 Aug 1973 [18 Sept 1972] 17604/76 Divided out of 1466074 Headings C1J and C1A Bodies and coatings are produced by (a) impregnating a particulate material with a solution of chromic acid containing a dissolved metal oxide other than CrO 3 or with a solution of a metal chromate, forming the impregnated material into a shaped body or coating and heating to cure the body or coating; (b) impregnating the body or coating with a solution of a soluble chromium compound, drying and heating the impregnated body or coating to convert the chromium compound into chromium oxide (Cr 2 O 3 ) ; and (c) repeating the impregnating, drying and heating steps at least once to densify, harden and strengthen the body or coating. Many suitable particulate materials and many suitable impregnating solutions are listed. The examples relate to the production of bodies and coatings from Si 3 N 4 optionally together with SiC, ZrSiO 4 , H 2 SiO 3 or alumina, ZnS together with either SiC or powdered iron, TiN, Fe 4 N, a mixture of Fe 4 N and powdered aluminium, fibres of microquartz, glass or ceramics, aluminium wool, steel wool or bronze wool. The solutions used in the examples to impregnate the particulate materials are of magnesium chromate or dichromate, zinc dichromate, a mixture of zinc chromate and chromic acid, and a mixture of CrO 3 and Cr 2 O 3 . The solutions used in the examples to impregnate the shaped bodies and coatings are of chromic acid, magnesium dichromate and a mixture of zinc chromate and chromic acid.
