Abstract
1,234,043. Refractory bodies. KAMAN SCIENCES CORP. 28 May, 1968 [1 June, 1967], No. 25417/68. Headings C1A and C1J. [Also in Divisions C4-C5] Shapes composed of porous refractory metallic oxides in a partially sintered or underfired condition are impregnated with a metal compound which upon subsequent heating of the structure is converted to an oxide and hardens the structure. The shapes which can be impregnated consist of oxides of one or more of the oxides of Al, Ba, Be, B, Ca, Ce, Cr, Co, Cu, Ga, Hf, Fe, La, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Nb, Si, Ta, Th, Sn, Ti, W, U, V, Y, Zn and Zr. The shapes can be impregnated with aqueous solutions containing one or more of chromic acid, silico-tungstic acid, sodium phosphate, sodium triphosphate, or an acetate, chloride, oxychloride, chromate, nitrate or oxalate of Al, Be, Cd, Ca, Ce, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, La, Li, Mg, Mo, Ni, Sr, Th, Sn, W, Zn or Zr, a suitable impregnate is a solution of a metal compound in phosphoric acid. The shapes can be treated by impregnating with phosphoric acid and then heating either before or after the impregnating and heating with the metal compound. The original shape can contain fibres which retain their identity in the fully hardened body. The shapes can be subjected to more than one hardening treatment using the same or different impregnants. The examples in which the oxide shape is impregnated with the same oxide as that of the shape are that of alumina with aluminium nitrate solution, magnesia with magnesium chromate and zirconia with zirconium oxychloride.
