Abstract
694,390. Powder metallurgy; making compound forms. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. April 9, 1951 [April 8, 1950], No. 8213/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). In a method of making a machine part having a working surface of greater strength than the body portion, the body portion is made from metalpowder and is provided during or after the compacting of the powder with a metal coating of a dense and homogeneous structure which has not been formed by powder metallurgy. In one example, the body portion of a toothed wheel is pressed from steel powder with a low carbon content and either before or after sintering is coated at the working surfaces of the teeth with a layer of chromium applied galvanically or by spraying. In another example a cam is made by bending a strip of thin sheet-metal 12 into the required shape, butt-welding the ends of the strip and then compressing within it iron or steel powder 10 to form the body of the cam. The whole is then heated at 500‹-1000‹ C. to sinter the powder and cause the strip to adhere to the body, as by welding or soldering.
