Abstract
Process for applying a hard surface coating to a machining tool comprising five stages:- a) applying a slip contg. silica, alumina and a metal chromate soln. b) drying and firing at 650-700 degrees C approximately c) impregnating with a soln. of a metal chromate followed by firing at 650-700 degrees C, d) impregnating at least once with a chromic acid soln. contg. at least 30 wt.% Cr, firstly in in a vacuum, then at atmos. press. followed by firing at 650-700 degrees C, e) impregnating with a chromic acid soln. in a vacuum then at a pressure of 6 bars followed by firing at 650-700 degrees C this is repeated at least once. Tool life is considerably lengthened.
