Abstract

1418807 Making extrusion dies SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 13 Feb 1973 [14 Feb 1972] 7032/73 Heading B3A [Also in Division C7] A method of increasing the wear resistance of the working surface of an extrusion die includes hardening the working surface by forming on it a layer of diffusion products of one or more hardening agents and the material of the die, on which layer is deposited a coating comprising a binder together with metallic material and/or solid lubricants. The diffusion products are formed by nitriding and boriding and these processes may be performed either simultaneously or successively. Prior to coating, the hardened surface is cleaned, degreased, polished and honed and the coating is applied in paste form together with an inorganic binder. The binder is cured either by heating the die or allowing it to cure at room temperature for several days. One or more metallic materials may be applied and the solid lubricant may be either graphite or molybdenum disulphide.
