Abstract

Forming protective coatings or refractory metals based on niobium or tantalium or columbium by applying a suspension contg. chromium and titanium, a mineral halide actuator, and a polyolefin bidner (which depolyerises on heating without leaving any carbon residues), and heating in a non-oxidising atmosphere to cause the Cr and Ti to diffuse into the metals surface. Gives the metals oxidation-resistant coatings. Process is simpler and quicker than prior art processes.
