Abstract

The material contains 6-42 wt.% of fibres of a natural or synthetic slag, the fibres having been given a surface treatment to improve their refractory properties. The pref. surface treatment consists of applying an aq. soln. of CrO3 (0.2 M) and heating the fibres to convert the CrO3 to Cr2O3. Alternatively, fine particles of a refractory can be coated with a heat-resistant adhesive and then applied to the slag fibres. The advantage is a redn. is cost of the lining and a smaller discard of scrap from the top of steel ingots. Pref. the matl. also contains 50-55 wt.% refractory (acidic or basic) 0-12 wt.% organic matter, 1.5-6 wt. % cellulose or synthetic fibre and 4-15 wt. % phenolic binder.
