Abstract

Metal surfaces consisting predominantly of aluminium or magnesium are coated, after first being prepared by a chemical or electrochemical treatment, e.g. by anodizing or phosphating treatment to produce a porous or creviced surface, with poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene which is applied in the form of evenly spread powder and pressed on to the surface whilst heated to 300-400 DEG C., or by immersion in an aqueous suspension of poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene in a vacuum chamber, removing the metal surface from the suspension and drying at about 40 DEG C. at normal or slightly reduced pressure and repeating the treatment until the pores in the metallic surface are filled with poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene and a continuous layer thereof is built up, and finally heating to about 350 DEG C.
