Abstract

1323448 Refractory coatings BRITISH STEEL CORP 29 Nov 1971 [30 Nov 1970] 56730/70 Heading C7F [Also in Division F4] A steel-making lance is coated with (a) a layer containing Al, secondly (b) a refractory layer containing SiC and/or Si and finally (c) a further layer containing Al. Layers (a) and (c) may be Al, or Al plus Si and/or Ti, and may be applied in several ways, preferably by a metallizing process, e.g. flame-spraying. The intermediate layer may additionally comprise B, Cr, Mo, Ti, Zr or their carbides, certain B-Mo, B-Ti, B-Zr, Al-Si, Cr-Fe, Cr-Si and Si-Zr alloys, refractory oxides, e.g. Al 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , TiO 2 , refractory nitrides, e.g. titanium nitride, and silicides, e.g. Cr 3 Si, MOSi 2 , TiS 2 , or substances that can be converted into refractory materials after deposition, e.g. H 3 BO 3 , TiO 2 .Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 . SiO 2 , and ZrO 2 . SiO 2 . This layer may also be applied in several ways, but preferably by electric arc or flame spray coating. Preferably the intermediate layer comprises 15-30% SiC, 15-30% Si, 15-30% TiO 2 , 10-15% H 3 BO 3 and 15-30% Al powder. In an example, a steel lance is coated with (a) Al, (b) 22% SiC, 20% Si, 25% TiO 2 , 13% H 3 BO 3 , 20% Al, (c) Al; all coatings being applied by flame spraying. The ingredients of layer (b) may be enclosed in a sheath of Al or plastics, e.g. cellulose acetate, which is destroyed on spraying.
