Abstract

Hydroplane vessels.-The hull of a gliding boat comprises a central element between two lateral elements, the bottoms of the lateral elements b being below that of the central element a<1>. The bottoms of all the elements are inclined so that the boat will rise when in motion. At a certain speed, the bottom of the central element is raised clear of the water and rests on a mass of air passing between it and the water. The central element may be partially submerged when at rest. The lateral elements may be fitted with flexible planes, the ends of which may be hinged and supported by a vertical rod, as shown.
