Abstract

1453286 Locking threaded fasteners V E TIKHONOV N I ANDRIANOV and P S SMIRNOV 22 Oct 1973 [20 Oct 1972] 49126/73 Heading F2H A bolt-and-nut fastener 4, 5 for securing a removable panel 9 of an aircraft automatically locks when a screwdriver used to tighten it is removed from the driving socket 16 of the bolt. The bolt 4 is hollow and has a short four-start thread 17. A locking member comprises a rod 21 axially slidable in the bolt and carrying a transverse bar 22 the ends of which project through longitudinal slots 19 in the bolt and are shaped as thread portions having the same pitch as the thread 17 but a greater depth. A stop 25 is secured in the bolt tip by a swaged-on collar 28. A spring 24 urges the locking member towards the bolt head. The bolt 4 is captive in a sleeve 1 secured in the panel 9 and having a thread 29 matching the thread portions on the bar 22. The nut 5 is secured in a skin panel 10 by a sleeve 11 threaded on its outer surface, and has thread portions 36, 37 separated by a shoulder 39. Portion 36 has a thread depth corresponding to the thread on the ends of bar 22, while portion 37 has a thread depth equal to the difference between the depths of the portion 36 and the bolt thread 17. The portion 37 has four longitudinal slots 38 each capable of receiving an end of the bar 22. When a screwdriver bit is inserted into the socket 16, it forces the locking member into the bolt to a position in which the thread portions on the bar 22 are continuous with the main thread 17 so that the bolt can be screwed into the nut 5. When the thread 17 has passed through the nut thread portion 36, further axial movement of the bolt is prevented, and the fastener is in a tightened condition with an end face 18 of its thread 17 bearing on the nut shoulder 39 and the projecting ends of the bar 22 engaging in slots 38 of the nut. Removal of the screwdriver allows the spring 24 to move the locking member axially so that the thread on the bar 22 is out of alignment with the bolt thread 17, preventing loosening or unscrewing of the bolt.
