[Also in Divisions B3 and B4] A number of members 11, 12 are joined by a headed bolt with a tapered shank portion 18 inserted in a hole 20 through the members, the hole being similarly tapered but having a smaller average diameter so that there is an interference fit of the bolt when it is drawn into the hole by a fastener (such as a serratededge nut 17) when it engages a fastening-(e.g. threaded-) end 16 of the bolt. The bolt-end 16 has an overall diameter no greater than that of the smaller end of the tapered portion 18 of the shank. The bolt may have a pan head, Fig. 5 (not shown), instead of a countersunk head and the other end surface may have a recess 26, Fig. 4, with a serrated circumference for engagement by a tool for holding the bolt from turning when a hollow tool is used to tighten the nut 17. The top 22 of the nut is deformed, Fig. 4, for locking on the bolt and the bottom 23 contains an unthreaded counterbore 24. The nut and bolt are of steel alloy but the nut is softer to avoid torsion and to accommodate itself to an uneven surface.
