Abstract

1440057 Refrigerators CLARK EQUIPMENT CO 6 May 1975 [17 May 1974] 18934/75 In a refrigeration apparatus, e.g. a refrigerated display case 2, in which air is circulated by a fan 20 through a cooler 16, the air cooler 16 is provided with two air inlets 24, 28, the arrangement being such that when the inlet 24 is blocked by frost, the air enters through the inlet 28 thereby extending the cooling period between defrost cycles. As shown, air is withdrawn from the refrigerated space 4 by the fan 20 which passes the air from a plenum chamber 18 into a passage 22. From the passage 22, air normally passes into the inlet 24 of the cooler 16, but as frost builds up on the inlet 24, pressure builds up in the chamber 36 between the fan and the cooler and an increasing volume of air passes through a restriction 30 into a plenum chamber 34 thence into the second inlet 28 of the cooler 16. The velocity of the air through the restriction 30 is sufficient, when cooler inlet 24 is closed, to cause airborne frost to be thrown across the inlet 28 into a frost collecting cavity 32 as the air flow turns through 90 degrees into the inlet 28, thereby preventing this frost from blocking inlet 28.
