Abstract
1438464 Tufting A N SPANEL 25 Jan 1974 03606/74 Heading D1G Tufts are formed on a backing 'by conveying the yarn pneumatically along a duct towards a tufting station at the discharge end of the duct, the end of the duct being then advanced toward the tufting station to place a length of yarn there for subsequent attachment. The tufts are inserted into the backing B by threading the eye 24 of a needle 22 with yarn from a source 10 and drawing it through to implant it in the backing, returning the eye of the needle through the backing at another point (Figs. 3-9 not shown) and rethreading the eye with two yarn threads, one of which is continuous with the end previously implanted and the other originating from the yarn source 10. The tufting machine disclosed comprises a creel 10 supplying yarns of five different colours to a metering device 12 comprising pulleys 12X, Y disposed between brakes 12A, B, C controlled by a pattern device not described, the yarns then passing through a venturi block 32, supplied with air at 30, and to a needle threader duct 17 which may be of moulded plastics and is movable towards and away from a needle 22. Within the duct 17 the yarn ends are separated by divider strips 19 of metal or plastics. Operation of device 12 releases a length of chosen yarn to enter the extension or threader 18 which enters the eye 24 of the needle as the duct 17 moves rightwards as in Fig. I, and is left therein as the duct retracts. The yarn movements when a colour change is made is described. A cutter 40 may be provided to cooperate with a notch (99, Fig. 21 not shown) in the threader 18.
