Abstract

A warp knitted fabric is given a bulky appearance by knitting a grooved fabric from at least one set of yarns and simultaneously incorporating a second set of yarns on a single or double needle chain stitch effect such that the amount of yarn of the second set expressed in units of length is at least 1.4 times that of the first set of yarns. The first set of yarns may be knitted in tricot stitch or satin stitch and more than one set of ground yarns may be knitted. Smooth filamentary yarns may be used for both the ground fabric and for the yarns producing the bulky effect. The yarns may be polyamides, polyesters, polyolefines, polyethers or other thread forming polymers. The difference in the amount of yarn supplied by the guides supplying the yarns for producing the bulky appearance is achieved by increasing the rate of delivery of the corresponding warp beam or supply or other yarn feeding means.
