Abstract
1416482 Discharge lamps PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 March 1973 [25 March 1972] 13854/73 Heading H1D [Also in Divisions G3 and H2] A discharge lamp has a reservoir 6 of ions which are present in the discharge and means are provided for reversing the polarity of a direct potential on the reservoir relative to the discharge so as to control the direction of flow of the ions between the reservoir and the discharge. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 a high current through the main discharge path of the lamp increases the voltage drop across resistor 5 resulting in the breakdown of zener diode 9 and the imposition of a negative potential on reservoir 6 relative to electrode 16 resulting in the withdrawal of ions from the discharge. Conversely a low current will close the contacts 14 of relay 4 resulting in a positive potential on reservoir 6 during the half cycles when diode 15 conducts which will have the effect of adding ions to the discharge. In the case of a sodium lamp the reservoir can have a wall of #-aluminium oxide and can contain sodium fluoride or pure sodium. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) the auxiliary potential applied to the reservoir is from a separate D.C. supply via a two-way switch for reversing the polarity in this case for varying the colour of the lamp which contains caesium and potassium in addition to sodium and neon or argon.
