Abstract

1411151 Preventing overtightening of threaded fasteners LAMSON & SESSIONS CO 12 Feb 1973 [11 Feb 1972] 6858/73 Heading F2H [Also in Division B3] To ensure that a threaded fastener 10 can only be tightened to a predetermined torque and not overtightened, an auxiliary head 14 is welded as at 16 to the fastener, e.g. by friction welding, the auxiliary head being adapted to break away from the main body 12 when the predetermined torque is reached. The main body 12 of the fastener may or may not have a head, and can be made of the same or a different material as the auxiliary head 14. One of the main body 12 and the auxiliary head has a projecting portion the breaking torque of which is substantially equal to the predetermined torque and the other has an end surface that is greater than the surface area of a free end of the projecting portion to which it is welded.
