956,497. Nuts. UNITED-CARR FASTENER CORPORATION. Nov. 14, 1961, No. 40749/61. Heading F2H. [Also in Division B3] A nut, particularly for use on car bodies, and formed from sheet metal, e.g. spring steel, mild steel or non-ferrous metal, has a shell of hexagonal section with an end web 24 having a hole 25 for threaded engagement with a bolt and with a skirt 26 at the other end having inclined flat faces 27 at the margin so that scallops 26<SP>1</SP> are formed at the edge. Instead of the main portion of the skirt 26 being slightly inclined as shown, it may be perpendicular to the nut axis, Figs. 5-8 (not shown), but the inclination of the faces 27 remains the same. The edge of the hole may be formed for selflocking engagement with a bolt or formed to make its own thread on a threadless bolt. On a car body, a trim strip for masking a lap-weld, Fig. 10 (not shown), or for location at a ridge, Fig. 11 (not shown), has a threadless stud for co-operation with the nut. To make the bolt hole water-tight, a body of sealing material such as mastic, may be used with the nut, being pro-attached to its underside, Figs. 12, 13 (not shown). When the nut is in place and tightened, a ring of mastic is expelled, Fig. 14 (not shown), but remains attached to the body of mastic remaining under the nut by strands extruded through the gaps between the scallops 26<SP>1</SP>. Sealers such as polyvinyl chloride (possibly cellular) or washers of polyethylene may be used. A shearing burr formed at the lower angle of the scallop edges 26<SP>1</SP> gives a cutting edge which ensures good electric contact with the car body.
