Abstract

1352985 Stud and socket fastening GULTON INDUSTRIES Inc 14 Aug 1972 [23 Aug 1971] 37755/72 Heading E2B A fastener assembly 10, Fig. 1, comprises a fastener 12 having a shank 18 and a head 16, and a member 14 which receives the shank 18, the latter having a polygonal cross-section with alternate plain and serrated faces 20, 22, and the member 14 having resilient fingers 34, 36, Fig. 3, with the end portions 38, 40 thereof at least partially defining an opening for receiving the shank 18. The member 14 is provided with mounting holes 28, Fig. 1, through which rivets 47, 48 are passed to secure the member 14 to a panel 44 as shown in Fig. 3. A sheet 52 is held against the head of the fastener by a pressed on collar 56 and the shank 18 is positioned in the member 14, the end portions 38, 40 of the fingers 34, 36 being adjacent the plain surfaces 20 of the shank 18. The fastener is then rotated to the position shown in Fig. 4 to effect the clamping of a gasket 50 between the panel 44 and the sheet 52, the serrations engaging the end portions 38, 40 of the fingers 34, 36 and, being inclined, generating a screw or wedging action. In a modification a fastener head 16a, Fig. 7, is formed as a thumb screw and a member 14a has mounting holes 28a in a portion 24a thereof, the latter being substantially at right angles to a portion 58 thereof having fingers 34a, 36a therein. The member 14 may be replaced by member 14b, Fig. 8, or member 14c Fig. 9.
