Abstract

981,073. Nuts; locking nuts. UNITEDCARR Inc. Oct. 26, 1962 [Nov. 1, 1961], No. 40623/62. Heading F2H. A resilient sheet metal nut has a tubular hexagonal portion 11 surrounding a circular tubular portion 10 bearing thread-engagers or thread-cutting teeth 15, 16 on a radial flange 14 while the portion 11 bears a conical resilient flange 17. The nut may be made from spring steel, hardened and tempered after forming and given a rust-resistant finish. The nut may cut its own thread on a stud 21 integral with a car trim 20 for attachment to a car member 24. Tightening of the nut tends to flatten the flange 17 so that presumably the nut tends to lock itself.
