Abstract

1486647 Locking nuts and bolts M MURAO and K MURAO 17 July 1975 [26 March 1975] 30083/75 Heading F2H A nut 1 and bolt 11are looked together against vibration by a captive or separate basically frustoconical locking member 7 which is flattened in use between the bearing face of the nut and an adjacent workpiece 16 such that its inner peripheral edge 9 is forced into engagement with the threads 12 of the bolt as shown in Fig. 1 (III), the edge of the member 7 being harder than the threads 12 so that it cuts into the threads as the member is flattened. As shown in Figs. (I) and 1(III) the outer peripheral edge of the washer is fitted into a recess 5 in the nut and held captive by caulking of an annular projection 6. Alternatively as in Fig. 4(I) the outer peripheral edge may fit around the outside of the nut 1. The outer washer surface may have grooves (13) as in Figs. 7 (not shown) to grip against the workpiece 16. As shown in Fig. 9 the washer has outer teeth 14 to prevent rotation relative to the nut and inner teeth 15 to cut more easily into the threads 12 of the bolt.
