786,713. Locking nuts. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS .May 2, 1956, No. 13565/56. Class 89(1) A fastener unit comprises a screwed fastener, e.g. a nut 16, Fig. 4, or bolt having a transverse clamping surface 24 Fig. 3, extending outwards from the threaded part of the fastener, and an annular lock washer 18 held adjacent the surface, at least until it engages the workpiece, whereupon relative turning can occur between the washer and fastener. The nut &c. has cam surfaces 32 in the surface 24 extending in the same direction as, but at a slightly greater angle than, the threads, and ending in abutment surfaces 34. The washer is formed with cam portions 42 engaging the surfaces 32 and ending in teeth 44 which dig into the workpiece. The washer is held captive to the. nut by a collar with enlargements 50 engaging a counterbore 26 in the nut. In another arrangement, the washer 56, Fig. 9, is held to the nut 54 by adhesive 74 has cam portions 72 on its inner periphery engaging grooves in the clamping surface 58, and locking teeth 68.
