Abstract

910,446. Locking nuts and bolts. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Dec. 23, 1960 [Jan. 1, 1960], No. 83/60. Class 89 (1). A nut or bolt-head 11, with V- shaped projections 13, has a flange with a surface which forms part of a cone but is divided into lands 15 by recesses 16 with bases which also form part of a conical surface, this being parallel to the first; a tab 21 of a washer, Figs. 4, 5, is located in a hole 24 of a support member 19, e.g. an aero engine casing with the bolthead 11 inside, while another tab 23 locates in a recess 16. Alternate projections 13 may extend down into recesses 16 as in Fig. 3 or they may be of a uniform length and the recesses 16 extended under the alternate projections to form undercuts 25, Fig. 5. A second tab 22, Fig. 4, adjacent the flange, is spaced 90 degrees from tab 23 and is opposite a land 15 when tab 23 is opposite a recess. This means that the bolt or nut never requires turning through more than 15 degrees for one of the two tabs 22, 23 to be opposite a recess 16. The tabs 22, 23 may be smaller than those shown and close together so as to be capable of locating simultaneously in adjacent recesses 16, Fig. 1 (not shown). The bolt may be a set screw.
