Abstract

1,045,012. Bolted joints. SCREW & BOLT CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Jan. 8, 1964, No. 817/64. Heading B3U. In a joint, between contacting sheets of material, designed to prevent slip between the sheets one sheet 21 has a circular opening 22 and a nut 23 is welded to the sheet concentrically with the opening. The other sheet 20 has a slot 26 the width of which is less than the diameter of the opening 22. There is a shoulder 29 under the head of a bolt 27 so that as the joint is tightened the slotted sheet is deformed into the circular opening. The width of the slot may be greater than the diameter of the bolt but must not exceed the diameter of the shoulder. The depth of the shoulder is preferably not more than one half the total thickness of the sheets 20 and 21. In a modification. Fig. 8 (not shown), a clinch type nut 35 is used which has a cylindrical recess 38 which takes the place of the opening 22 in the sheet 21. In a further modification the sheet 20 has a circular opening instead of a slot and in a third modification the shoulder 29 is provided on a solid or Belleville washer instead of on the bolt-head.
