Abstract

1406420 Invalid chairs B W LYWOOD 5 Feb 1973 [3 Nov 1971] 51178/71 Heading A4J An invalid chair has a two part seat portion 3, 4 which is biased upwardly to help a seated person to stand by a system of links arranged to support the rear 4 of the seat portion in the same orientation to the horizontal during movement between the lowered sitting position and the raised standing position. Preferably the links include a parallelogram linkage 19 with two fixed points C, D on the chair frame, one side 21 of the linkage being common with a second parallelogram linkage connected to the two pivotally interconnected seat parts. A tension spring 32 having one end adjustable along an accurate weight adjustment guide 33 on the common side 21 resiliently biases the seat portion upwardly. The height to which the seat portion can be raised may be adjusted by adjustment of a strut 35 connected to an inward entension 25a of the lower link 25 of the first linkage in arcuate guide 34 formed in the lower end of the upper link 27 of the second linkage. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the fixed points of the first linkage are on the front and base of the chair frame and the seat parts 3, 4 are connected by struts to this linkage, there being no second parallelogram linkage, height adjustment means or weight adjustment means present.
