Abstract
608,542. Seats. GULL, J. Feb. 26, 1946, No. 5982. [Class 52(ii)] An invalid chair which enables the invalid to move from a seated to a standing position without external aid comprises a seat pivoted at its front edge to a base frame and a back pivoted to the rear edge of the seat and connected by linkage to the base frame so that as the seat is raised about its front edge the back rises at a constant inclination to the vertical. The chair, shown in an intermediate position, comprises a U-shaped base 12 having at each side an upright member 13 to which the seat frame is pivoted at 16. The flanges 15 of the seat frame at the rear are bent downwardly at 18 and a back frame 21 is pivoted thereto selectively by means of a pivot 24 engaging holes 22, 23 in the respective back and seat frames. An adjustable link 26 connects an extension 27 of the back frame to the base frame and constitutes part of a parallel linkage whereby the back frame when rising or falling maintains its angular position. The chair is operated by an electric motor 39 operating, through worm gearing, a rod 36 having connected thereto with lost motion a member 42 having a cross rod 33 The cross rod 33 carries at its ends rollers 34 adapted to ride on fixed ramps 35 and also thrust rods 32 whereby the seat is moved about its front pivots 16. When in its lowest position of use a cross rod 47 on the seat frame seats in crutches 41 on vertical members 40. As the back 19 rises arm rests 48 aid the invalid to assume the standing position. In a modification the chair frame is mounted on wheels and can be raised relatively thereto by means of jacks. In addition a foot rest is provided which in the seating position of the invalid remains above the ground but is lowered thereon as the invalid is raised to standing position.
