Abstract

447,327. Adjustable seats. IMPERIAL AIRWAYS, Ltd., Victoria Station, Westminster, and BURCHALL, H., The Croft, Woodland Way, Kingswood, Surrey. Nov. 13, 1934, Nos. 32652 /34 and 21838/35. [Class 52 (ii)] An adjustable seat comprises a rigid framework 1, 2, vertically disposed supporting members 6 hinged to the front of the frame 2, a seat frame 12 pivoted to the members 6 and sliding at its rear on a runway 5 forming part of the rigid frame, and a back frame 16 pivoted at its lower end to the rear of the seat frame 12. The rear of the seat is connected to the rigid frame by means of cables 18 passing over pulleys 19, 21 and connected to springs anchored to the frame. The inclination and height of the seat are adjusted by means of hand levers 26 pivoted to the seat frame and actuating links 42 connected to the members 6 ; the hand levers are retained in adjusted position by engaging in notches in quadrants 28 which are pivotally connected to the front of the seat frame and to arm-rest members 31 which at their rear ends are pivoted to the back frame 16. The back may be folded down as shown in Fig. 5, by breaking the joint of a hinged strut 36 connected to the lever 26 and to the back. An adjustable head rest 52 Fig. 1, may be provided, also a detachable foot and leg rest 47. The frame is preferably built up of tubular members, on which canvas &c. is stretched by lacing to support the seat and back cushions. In a modification, the rear of the seat frame is supported on members hinged to the base of the fixed frame instead of sliding on the members 5.
