1405979 Stud and socket fastenings DAIMLER-BENZ AG 9 Aug 1973 [10 Aug 1972] 37818/73 Heading E2B A vehicle roof structure comprises a removable roof and a releasable roof fastening including a handle 22 on the roof having a shank by which it is adjustably connected to a marginal portion of the roof and a fastening part of which by turning the shank is engageable with axial resilience with a retaining section, a bracket 8 of the vehicle superstructure. The upper end of of the shank has a head part 21 with a slot for receiving an end portion of the handle, part of the shank having a thread by which it is adjustably screwed into a sleeve 12 secured to the roof, two arms 11 at the lower end of the shank project from a slot 11a in a hollow guide cone 24 and are insertable by turning the handle into respective guideways 28 in the bracket 8 and engaged therewith. Each guideway has widened ends in each limb 27 of the U-shaped bracket 8, a central narrower portion of each guideway providing a detent for retaining the arms 11 in fastening position. The plastics cone 24 is secured to the shank by a washer 25 and a resilient upper flange 24a of the cone abuts a resilient ring 26 resting on the upper surfaces of the limbs 27. The sleeve 12 is secured to the roof by a nut 17 screwed thereon. A plastics cap 20 fits over a collar 32 on the shank and a collar 13 on the upper end of the sleeve the cap abuts a plate 15 secured to the sleeve 12, the plate having a stud 16 which engages in a hole in the roof to prevent relative movement. The movement of the handle is limited to nearly 180‹ by a lug 32a on the shank collar 32 engaging ends of a recess 31 in the sleeve collar 13. In operation, the handle is turned to engage the cone between the limbs of the bracket and then turned further to insert the arms 11 in the guideways 28 until they pass the detents 28a at the centre of the guideways.
