Abstract

1307430 Stud and socket fastenings AMP Inc 8 Nov 1971 [28 Nov 1970] 56645/70 Heading E2B A moulded plastics fastener for fastening a member having a head and a shank to a mounting panel comprises a first resilient sleeve portion 16 connected at one end to a second coaxial sleeve portion 17 by a thin frangible portion 18, the first sleeve portion 16 having a bore 20 for the reception of the shank and a flange 22 for engagement with a surface of the panel, the outer surface of the first sleeve portion 16 tapering from a relatively large diameter adjacent the flange to a relatively small diameter adjacent the frangible portion 18 and the second sleeve portion having a bore diameter intermediate in magnitude, the bore diameter of the first sleeve portion and the relatively large diameter of the outer surface of the first sleeve portion the second sleeve portion having a coaxial annular surface 31. A hand tool may be used to engage the sleeve portion 16 on a shank 13 inserted in an aperture 14 of the panel 15, and to exert pressure on the surface 31 of flange 30 to insert a nose 21 into the aperture and to cause the sleeve portion 17 to ride up an inclined surface 25 of a lip 24 thus fracturing the frangible portion 18 and allowing the sleeve portion 17 to move along the tapered surface to clamp the sleeve portion 16 on the shank 13. In a modification, the flange of the sleeve portion 16' is dish shaped and seals with the panel surface and a lip 52 locates and maintains the fastener 50 on the shank. The flange on the sleeve portion has a chamfer 55 and a tool is inserted between the chamfer 55 and chamfer 53 on the flange of the sleeve portion 16' to remove the fastener from the shank.
