Abstract

1,001,516. Stud and socket fastenings. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS. Sept. 7, 1961 [Sept. 8, 1960], No. 32173/61. Heading E2B. [Also in Division F2] An assembly comprises a work piece having an aperture in which there is a fastener of a deformable mouldable material comprising a shank passing through the aperture, and a head engaging one side of the work piece, the shank having a number of axially-extending ribs of which the parts within the aperture are crushed and the parts lying outside the aperture serve as shoulders securing the fastener in the work piece, the shank being held in an expanded state by a drive pin or screw lying in an axial passageway in the shank. In the arrangement according to Figs. 1 and 2, in which the fastener is secured in apertured work pieces 58, 60, the fastener comprises a body member 32 and drive pin 34 which may be integral with or separate from the body member and which may be threaded. The body member includes shank sections 36, 38, 40 integrally joined to a head 48 and providing a bore 50 which is tapered towards the entering end of the shank sections and which is adapted to receive the drive pin 34 for compressing the shank section within the aperture on the work pieces. The outer surface of the shank is generally cylindrical and is formed with grooves 66 which provide ribes 68 tapering in width towards the entering end of the fastener. The head 48 includes a sealing section 70 and a resilient flange 74 which, in use, forms a secondary seal against the work piece 58. In another arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown) the ribs 68 are formed by projections on the cylindrical surface of the shank. In the arrangement according to Fig. 5 the head 48b is formed to receive a channel section moulding and a bell-shaped plastics or metal washer 86, (see also Figs 9 and 12 (not shown)), is provided to form a seal with the convex side of a work piece 58b. A somewhat similar washer is used in the case of a concave side of a work piece, Fig. 7 (not shown). In another arrangement, Figs. 8, 13 and 14 (not shown) the washer is generally hemispherical while according to Fig. 15 (not shown) the washer includes a neck portion which is adapted to seat in the under surface of the fastener head. In the arrangement according to Figs. 16 and 17, a washer 86f is provided with a thin sleeve portion 104 having a closed end wall 106 which encloses the shank of the fastener. In a further arrangement, Fig. 18 (not shown), the passageway through the shank is generally Y-shaped on cross-section for a complementary Y-shaped driving pin. In further arrangements, Figs. 19, 20 and 21 (not shown) the shank sections are generally similar to the Fig. 5 arrangement and the drive pin is a screw, which when driven in, impresses complementary threads in the wall of the passageway. In the arrangement according to Figs. 22 and 23 (not shown), the shank sections taper outwardly from the entering end of the shank and then inwardly towards the head.
