Abstract

1498118 Vehicle radiators ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 9 May 1975 [13 May 1974] 19557/75 Heading F4S [Also in Division B8] A drain plug assembly, in particular for use in vehicle radiators, comprises a body part 11 including an end wall formed with a hole 30 coaxial with and communicating with a cavity defined by two or more resilient sidewalls 20, 21 projecting from the end wall, the sidewalls being formed with radially projecting lugs 26, 27, 28 presenting axially spaced shoulders near the free ends of the sidewalls, the assembly also comprising a stem part 12 having a shank, which lies in use in the cavity of the body part, the shank having a radially enlarged head 41 at one end, and at its other end resilient retaining means adapted to extend through the hole 30 to maintain the parts in assembled condition, the stem part also including locking means, e.g, screw threads 31 or cam means, intermediate the length of the shank able to cooperate with the end wall of the body part to draw the stem part axially into the cavity. The assembly may be inserted in an aperture 13 in a vessel, e.g. a radiator, in an assembled condition, the lugs 26, 27, 28 engaging on either side of the aperture to secure the assembly in the aperture. The end of the stem part remote from the head 41 is preferably bifurcated to form the resilient retaining means, lugs 34 being provided to prevent reverse movement of the stem part past the hole 30. The locking means 31 is spaced from the lugs 34 a distance equal to or greater than the thickness of the end wall of the body part, In the locked condition of the assembly, an enlarged portion 37 of the stem part engages in the sidewalls 20, 21 of the body part to maintain the sidewalls in engaging condition with the aperture 13. The aperture 13 is preferably formed in a dished portion 14 by the vessel wall 16 and in the locked conditon of the assembly a washer 40 adjacent the head 41 seats against the wall 16 surrounding the aperture. Longitudinal ribs 46 are preferably formed in the shank adjacent the washer 40 whereby rotation of the washer is minimized during final tightening of the assembly. The body part and stem part are preferably formed of plastics material.
