Abstract
937,220. Stud-and-socket fastenings; locking bolt-like pins. G. A. HINGLEY, and W. G. WELLS. Sept. 26, 1961 [July 13, 1960; Sept. 21, 1960], Nos. 24346/60 and 32467/60. Classes 44 and 89 (1). An attachment pin for fixing a first member 10 to a second member 11 is made of a resilient material in one piece and comprises a head 12 and a shank portion 14, presenting longitudinal ribs 15, the roots of which are interconnected along the length of the shank portion and which taper towards the end of the shank portion remote from the head, the shank portion having a neck 16 adjacent the head and the ribs having shoulder faces 17 which extend outwardly at the base of the neck beyond the periphery of the neck. In the construction shown, the member 10 is a trim moulding and the member 11 is the body panel of a motor vehicle. The two members are gripped between the underface of the head and the shoulder faces 17, the pin being engaged with the member 11 by passing its shank portion through an aperture 24 in the member 11. The connection between the ribs 15 and the neck 16 is undercut to promote flexibility of the ribs and the neck can be a sufficiently tight fit in the aperture 24 to make a water-tight connection. The head has a recess 21 which provides an annular rim and this resiliently engages within the channel of the trim moulding to locate the trim moulding transversely on the head. As shown, the shank portion has four ribs which together with a portion 18 which join them together are arranged in H formation but in a modification the ribs can either be arranged radially or adjacent pairs can be at right-angles, with the ribs offset from the long axis of the pin by an amount equal to that thickness, the edges being chamfered or radiused to permit easier entry into the aperture. The pin can be used for connecting two panels together in which case the head is flat and instead of faces 17 which are substantially at right-angles to the axis of the shank portion the faces are obliquely arranged so that the pin can easily be withdrawn from the aperture. The head can be in the form of a two jaw clip for gripping pipes or cables.
