Abstract
1404921 Regulating I C engine intake air temperature GENERAL MOTORS Ltd 2 May 1974 [24 May 1973] 24791/73 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] A temperature-operated valve 19 for variably connecting to atmosphere a vacuum line 17 between the intake manifold 22 of an I.C. engine 23 and a vacuum motor 7 regulating with valves 11, 12 the supply of cold and warm air to an engine air filter 1 has spigot pipes 18, 20 for connection to the vacuum line, and a plastics ball 38 moved relative to a brass screw in seat 35 by a bi-metal strip 32 so as to regulate the flow of air from within the air filter into the vacuum line according to the temperature of air in the air filter. In order to increase the speed of response an air bleed 42 into the filter may be provided. The two shells 25, 28 of the housing, the top one 25 of which is preferably metal and the lower one 28 of which is metal or plastics, are sealed with adhesive 41 at their peripheries. The valve ball is preferably nylon. In a modification the upper shell is a metal pressing with external ribs (60) and an internal boss (61) to which the end of the bi-metal strip 32 is secured by riveting (62). In a further modification the bi-metal strip is mounted externally of the housing and has its free end loosely connected to a stem(50) on the ball extending through the seat.
