Abstract

The temperature of the cooling system of an internal combustion engine is controlled by a thermostat with a bulb which is immersed in the cooling water. When the temperature of the cooling water exceeds the pre-set limit, the thermostat actuates a valve. The valve then connects a bellows with the engine inlet manifold. This reduction of internal pressure causes the bellows to be compressed and move a bar which is connected to shutters mounted in front of the radiator. The shutters are opened by movement of the bar allowing more air to flow through the radiator to provide increased cooling.
