Abstract

822,373. Water supply fittings for vehicles. SATZGER, E. Jan. 28, 1957 [Jan. 30, 1956], No. 2939/57. Class 103(2) [Also in Groups XIII and XXIX] In a railway car, a service water tank 5, Fig. 2, is fed with condensate (or with steam and condensate or even, if there is danger of freezing, with steam) raised by steam pressure from the outlet 3, Fig. 3, of a condensate reservoir 2, e.g. by way of a space-heating radiator in a lavatory compartment, to the inlet 10 of a valve controlled by a rod-and-expanding-tube thermal element 21, 17 through which the condensate passes to the tank 5 by way of openings 18 in an adjustable screw cap 19 bearing the rod 21. The condensate reservoir 2 is provided with an automatic drain valve 7 and with flanges 8 for connection to pipes to the car radiators which are supplied with steam from the main pipe 1. The expanding tube 17 bears a fin 27 and contains a conduit 28 through which the condensate passes and which has at least one shielded side-opening 32 to the space 29 between the conduit and expanding tube. Inflowing hot fluid affects the tube 17 only when the flow is throttled by the valve member 13 operated by the rod-and-tube 21, 17 through a lever 25 pivoted at 24. When the valve is wide open and the flow strong, the fluid does not collect in the space 29 and the tube 17 is influenced mainly by the surrounding tank-water which if cold causes the valve to remain wide open so that steam enters the tank 5, as well as, or instead of, condensate. The thermostatic valve is adjusted coarsely by the screw cap 19, .and adjusted finely by a screw 41 in the lever. The screw is accessible when a plug 42 is removed. The valve 13 may be moved from its seat by manipulation of a plunger 43. With the valve 13 partially open, condensate flows from the reservoir 2 through bores 40 to a nozzle 38, but further opening, in cold conditions in the tank 5, causes steam from the line 1 and the top of the reservoir to flow down a tube 35 to the nozzle 38 to mix with the condensate on its way to the tank 5.
