Abstract

1402643 Mobile luffing-arm apparatus; grabs T ROCHE 5 July 1972 [6 July 1971] 31510/72 Heading B8H Apparatus for use in handling and erecting poles comprises a grab unit 4 mounted on a vehicle 1 by means of a pair of elevatable arms 20, the grab unit consisting of a first clamp member which is formed by two angle members 41, 42 which together form an elongate member on which end plates 43, 44 which have jaw-parts 45, 46 formed therein are stationarily mounted, and two further clamp members 55, 56 which are pivotally mounted on a rod 50 which is attached by means of stays 51-54 to the first clamp member which is mounted for rotation about a shaft 48 relative to a frame 27 located at the ends of the arms 20 whereby the grab unit 4 as a whole is rotatable relative to the arms 20. The rotation of the grab unit 4 about the shaft 48 is effected by means of a ram 72 and the movement of the clamp members 55, 56 relative to the first clamp member is effected by means of an hydraulic ram 68 whose piston-rod 67 is connected to the arm 53 of a crank 64 which is attached at 63 to a transverse link 61 connecting the clamp members 55, 56, whose respective jaw-parts 59, 60 co-operate with the jaw-parts 45, 46 in gripping and holding a pole therebetween. A pole which initially is lying on the ground is gripped by the grab unit 4, elevated by the arms 20 and rotated through 90 degrees about the shaft 48 so that it is ready to be inserted into a hole prepared in the ground. On elevating the grab unit 4 and the pole gripped therein further lift is obtained by rotation of the unit 4 towards the arms 20, such rotation being effected by rotation of links 23, 24, pivotally connected to the arms 20 and frame 27, by means of respective hydraulic rams 25, 26.
