Abstract

1277880 Gathering fruit P F EDWARDS 18 Sept 1969 [15 Oct 1968] 48846/68 Heading A1F [Also in Division B4] In a gripping device, particularly for gripping tree trunks, a double acting piston cylinder combination 22 controls the movement of a jaw 18 relative to a jaw 13. From a gripping position piston rod 23 moves plate 16, and thus a member 11 to which the plate is connected, outwardly until a stop 24 on the member 11 and a stop 29 abut against a bracket 12. The stop 29 causes a tongue member 26 to be disengaged from a slot 27 so that further movement of rod 23 pivots the plate 16 about an axle 15. Pivotal movement of the plate is limited by stops 20, 21 engaging against two plates 14 which mount the axle 15. The member 11 is of hollow non-circular cross-section and when the device is used on a tree the jaws are provided with rubber pads of hollow cylindrical form. When mounted on fruit-harvesting tree shaking apparatus a body part 10 mounts a vibrator comprising a pair of eccentrically mounted masses interconnected by a chain and driven by an hydraulic motor. The fluid is provided by a pump mounted on a tractor to which the body part 10 is attached by a frame. The body part is suspended in the frame by links to permit longitudinal movement and can be raised or lowered.
