Abstract

1347882 Counterbalancing; luffing arm apparatus T LEVRINI 27 July 1971 [29 July 1970] 35233/71 Headings B8B and B8H A device for lifting a load carrying cabin D comprises a pair of articulated arms B, C freely pivoted at 2 to a base structure E, each arm being balanced at least in part by associated pairs of counterweights 4, 5. The counterweights 4 are mounted on a pair of extensions of the arm B beyond its pivot 2 and the counterweights 5 are mounted on a pair of radius arms pivotable about the pivot 2 and controlled by a chain transmission 7 coupling equal diameter wheels 6 and 8 secured to the radius arms and the arm C. The cabin D is pivoted at 9 to the arm C and has its orientation maintained during movement of the arms B and C by chains 10 and 14 coupling a wheel 11 fixed to the cabin to a wheel 15 fixed on the pivot shaft 2, via a pair of integral wheels rotatable about the axis 3 pivoting the arms B and C together. The first arm B is moved by an hydraulic ram 19 and the second arm C is moved relative to the first arm by an hydraulic ram 20 fixed on the arm B and drivingly engageable with the chain transmission 7. Alternatively a ram coupled between the arms B and C could be used. The ram 19 may be coupled to an alternative point 22 on the arm B to vary the lifting range therefor. Ballast weights 23 on the cabin D are removed in proportion to the load placed in the cabin, whereby the cabin remains balanced by the initial weights 4 and 5 on the device. The base structure E is provided with wheels 16 drivable for example along a circular guide 17 for rotation of the device about a vertical axis XX. All the controls for the device may be positioned in the cabin. In another embodiment the chains 7 are replaced by rods, for a limited range of operations, and the arm C may be operated directly from the base structure by interconnecting ram means.
