Abstract

1,248,245. Luffing booms for supporting workmen; jib cranes. SIMON ENG. DUDLEY Ltd. 19 Feb., 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 8823/68. Headings B8B and B8H. The outer section 19 of an articulated boom 15, 19 mounted at the rear of a vehicle and carrying a load support 20, is capable of rotation through 360 degrees relative to the inner section 15. A ram 26 is pivotally connected between a pivot 27 on the inner boom section and a pair of links 29, 30. The link 29 is pivotally mounted on the inner section and the link 30 is pivotally mounted in one of four holes in an index plate, Fig. 4 (not shown), secured to the outer section 15 coaxially with the pivotal connection 24 between the sections. The arrangement is such that the ram and linkage can cause rotation of the outer section relative to the inner section through 180 degrees. The four holes in the index plate permit the arc of rotation to be displaced in increments of 90 degrees by repositioning the pivot of the link 30. The load support 20 is maintained upright by means of links 36, 39 and an endless chain 41 passing around sprockets 40, 42. The boom is pivoted at 14 to a support 11 which is rotatable about a vertical axis at the rear of the vehicle. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the boom is rotatable about a vertical axis on a support which is mounted at the outer end of a parallelogram boom, the inner end of which is mounted behind the vehicle cab. Cranes.-A winch 43 is mounted on the support 11 and pulleys are provided on the pivots 14, 24, 25 for a rope 45 extending from the winch to a hook 46 below the carrier or the outer end of the inner boom section 15.
