By aerating ascending column.-Air-lift apparatus comprises a water-pipe D and an air-pipe d, the latter being carried by a plate E provided with adjusting-screws &c. whereby the pipe d may be adjusted relatively to the water-pipe for varying the size of the air inlet N to the mixing-tube J. The tube J is attached by webs j to a member H carried by the lower end of the water-pipe. The air-tube carries an attachment K slidably mounted on the tube J and provided with a water inlet L opening into the lower end of the pipe J. The air passes from the pipe d through a port 0 to a port N between the pipes L, J, and water enters by the lower end of the pipe L and is mixed with the air in the tube J. As the mixture enters the member H, more water is drawn in through the webs j. A scale pocket m is attached to the lower end of the pipe d. The water-pipe may be movable and the air-pipe fixed.
