Abstract

1397242 Closure members for cartons TAYLOWE Ltd 11 May 1972 [11 May 1971] 14295/71 Headings B8P and B8D A closure member 2 for a carton 1 comprises a rim 5 having a peripheral channel to receive the side or sides of the carton at an open end, a hinged lid 3 closing an aperture surrounded by the rim, and a removable sheet which covers the aperture. As shown, the rim 5 and lid 3 are pressure formed from a sheet of P.V.C. and the channel is formed by a fold 6. The walls 7, 8 of the channel are flared away from each other at the opening of the channel and are more nearly parallel at the innermost part of the channel. The top edge of the carton is permanently adhesively secured in the channel. A sheet 10 of aluminium foil coated with P.V.C. is welded or glued to a flange 11 of the rim 5 and can be removed by peeling or tearing. An edge or corner portion of the sheet 10 may be left unattached to facilitate removal. Lugs 11A on the rim engage sockets 12 on the lid with a snap action. Additional socket members 13 on the lid facilitate stacking in a machine. A lining of similar material to sheet 10 may be provided in the carton. In a modification, the rim 5 and sheet 10 are integral, a removable central area being defined by a line of weakness (20) and tabs (21) being provided to facilitate tearing. In a further modification, the closure member is formed by injection moulding, the channel (18) being defined between two depending walls (17).
