Abstract

1343665 Container closures; spouts B J R CHRISTENSEN and P B JACOBSEN 8 Dec 1971 [11 Dec 1970] 57097/71 Headings B8T and B8D An extensible plastics pouring spout 9 is sealingly secured in its retracted position in an opening of a can top 2 by an external bead 25 which is provided at the lower edge of a plastics plug 17 and which presses a circumferential bulge 26 outwardly under the rim of a dependent web 6 defining the can opening when the bottom plug wall 20 is distorted inwardly on bending a finger grip 21 upstanding from said plug wall under a retaining web 23 on the plug rim. The upper end of the spout is provided with upper and lower internal circumferential beads 14 and 15 of triangular and semi-circular cross-sectional shape, respectively, and the plug bead 25 lies below the bead 15 in the retracted secured position of the spout. The upper rims of the spout and plug are provided with flanges 12 and 24 and the lower portion 10 of the spout tapers from its free end towards the upper end for wedging engagement with the opening-defining web 6 on withdrawal of the spout, an end stop flange 11 being provided. To extend the spout and remove the plug, the finger grip is freed from its retaining web and pulled upwardly. The plug bead initially moves past the lower spout bead and enters a depression 16 between the spout beads. Continued upward pulling raises the spout until stop flange 11 engages the edge of the opening. Further upward pulling on the finger grip removes the plug from the spout. Closure is effected by reversing the procedure.
