Abstract

1395063 Electric couplings BURNDY CORP and BICC-BURNDY Ltd 24 May 1972 [24 May 1971 3 June 1971] 24417/72 Heading H2E A tap-off connector for a single sector-shaped conductor 13 (Fig. 2) of a cable grips corners of the conductor 13 between a hook 11 and a moving member 20, both of which pierce the insulation 12. In one embodiment (Fig. 2) the member 20 has longitudinal blades 21, 22 or transverse blades (31, 32, Fig. 5, not shown) and is driven by an insulating piston 15, which in turn is driven by a screw 16. The body 10 is insulating. Abranch conductor 28 is held between the member 20 and the piston 15. In another embodiment (Figs. 8 and 9) the body 114 is conductive and the hook is formed in two sections 115, 116 covered by insulation 130, each having teeth 117, 118. A piercing element 123 formed integrally with a screw 122 engages the conductor 110, 111 or 112. The branch conductor 135 is gripped by a separate screw 132. The connector body 114 is so shaped that three can be arranged in the same plane around a cable, the head portion 121 of each fitting in the gap 120 (Fig. 8) between the two hook sections 115, 116 of the next. In a similar embodiment (Fig. 10, not shown) the insulation piercing element 123 is replaced by an element (140) separate from the screw (141), and the screw has a shear section 150 to limit the applied pressure.
