Abstract

987,514. Insulating cable joints. PYROTENAX Ltd. March 18, 1964 [March 21, 1963], No. 11282/63. Heading.H2E. A cable joint for single or multicore metal sheathed cables comprises cable cores E which are mechanically and electrically connected together by a butt scarf or lap joint and surrounded by a layer of mineral insulation G such as magnesia, steatite or aluminium oxide which is closely surrounded by a malleable metal sleeve F of sufficient length to be connected to each cable sheath B of cables A and A<SP>1</SP>. Moisture is driven off through a breather hole F<SP>1</SP> by heating the cable progressively towards the joint and a reducing operation is performed on the sleeve F which compresses the mineral insulating material G within it. The sleeve can be reduced by forming peripheral grooves F<SP>2</SP>, swaging, or by drawing down both the cable and sleeve. The ends of sleeve F are externally tapered at F<SP>3</SP> to facilitate drawing the cable through dies in the application of a polyvinyl-chloride servings. The above process can also be applied to metal sheathed plastic covered cables (Figs. 12 and 13, not shown) and to partly processed cables (Figs. 14 and 15, not shown).
