Abstract
1385975 Direct contact cooling of steam R E SELF 18 April 1972 [26 May 1971] 17926/72 Heading F4K [Also in Divisions F2 and G3] A device for conditioning steam by introducing cooling water into the steam and thereafter reducing the steam pressure, comprises a stack of annular discs 9 offering a plurality of labyrinth passages therebetween for steam flowing from an inlet 8 to an annular chamber 10 and outlet 11, the volume of such steam flow being controlled by means of a plug valve 14 movable within the stack. The reciprocable movement of the plug is controlled by an actuating head 17 in the form of a follower which is adapted to be operated by a suitable cam device responsive to steam pressure at or adjacent to the inlet 8. The arrangement ensures a uniform steam-pressure-responsive flow rate through the disc stack 9. Steam temperature reduction is achieved by supplying cooling water to the steam prior to the latter entering the disc stack 9, the supply being by way of passages 23, 20 and 18 leading to an orifice 19. The size of the orifice 19 is determined by the relative disposition of plug 14 and a fixed tapered metering pin 24, such size at all times ensuring a water flow rate proportional to the steam flow rate. On leaving the orifice 19, the water is distributed over 360 degrees.
