945,086. Mixing flowing fluids. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. May 10, 1962 [May 23, 1961], No. 17981/62. Heading B1C. Apparatus for mixing fluids flowing under pressure, especially those of different temperatures, comprises a spherical mixing chamber 11 into which a first fluid is fed by a pipe 12 having vanes 22 which give a rotary motion to the fluid so that it fans out in the form of a cap. A second fluid is supplied as a plurality of streams to a point within the cap by apertures 24 in the closed end 23 of a pipe 13, and the mixed fluids are discharged through eight outlets as at 25a, 25e ; (see also Fig. 5, not shown). The walls of the chamber 11 are thereby maintained at a temperature between those of the incoming fluids and the temperature gradient between the chamber and the supply pipes is reduced by the annular construction 18, 19 ; 20, 21 of the latter. In a modification (see Fig. 6, not shown) the pipe 12 has a cap-like extension surrounding the apertures 24 and the vanes may be situated between the periphery of the extension and the pipe 13.
