Abstract

1370229 Waveguide directional couplers INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 22 Aug 1972 [31 Aug 1971] 39087/72 Heading H1W A drectional coupler is provided with movable plates of dielectric material spaced from and parallel to the common waveguide wall containing the coupling slot. In the short-slot coupler shown, having a coupling slot 5 arranged in the common sidewall 9 of rectangular waveguides 1, 2, trapezoidal dielectric plates 6, 7 are arranged symmetrically on either side of the slot and may be moved in a direction normal to the slot. To this end, the plates are a push fit between buttons 8 of plastic material attached to the broad walls of the waveguides. The variation in coupling coefficient obtained by moving the plates is explained in terms of the influence of the plates on the phase constants of the odd and even modes propagated in the coupler.
