Abstract

A waveguide filter incorporates both dual mode operation, in which orthogonally plane polarised waves traverse the same filter cavity, and evanescent operation at a frequency below the cut-off frequency of the guide. The combination of dual-mode and evanescent-mode operation is achieved by the introduction of capacitive susceptance (11) balanced between the orthogonal modes. Different coupling coefficients, and therefore different transmission characteristics, for the two orthogonal modes are obtained by differential loading of the resonant cavities. This is achieved by differential inductive susceptances (13) having e.g. three posts extending in one orthogonal direction and two in the other. <IMAGE>
