Abstract
1336996 Orthogonal mode waveguide cavities NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 5 May 1971 [27 May 1970] 25513/70 Heading H1W A cavity 12 capable of resonance in two orthogonal modes, which may be coupled by a ferrite device, Hall-effect device &c., is coupled through irises 13, 15 to respective rectangular waveguides 19, 14, e.g. (as shown) to the broad face of waveguide 19 and to the narrow face of waveguide 14. Iris 13 lies off the centre line of the waveguide 19 whereby the orientation of the magnetic vector of the standing wave in the vicinity of the iris is determined by the position of the adjustable short-circuit 16. Thus the polarization of the wave coupled from the waveguide 19 to the cavity 12 may be varied. The coupling between the orthogonal modes may be varied by means of a rotatable dielectric plunger 18 of asymmetric cross-section.
