Abstract
1,101,642. Waveguide isolators. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. 21 Jan., 1965 [23 Jan., 1964], No. 2714/65. Heading HlW. An isolator uses the helicon effect produced in a semi-conductor body 5 subject to a circularly-polarized signal field and a longitudinal magnetic field. Circular polarization (C.P.) is produced in a coaxial line 1, 2 at the surface of a tubular ceramic member 3 surrounding the inner conductor 1. In the presence of a longitudinal magnetic field, the dielectric constant of the semi-conductor body 5 appears either positive or negative according to the direction of rotation of the C.P. signal field, i.e. according to the direction of propagation. Hence, for one direction of propagation, the signal field is concentrated in the region of the semi-conductor body and for the other direction, is concentrated in the region of a dissipative graphite body 6.
